Elayne Preston - neg painting 3

Workshop Description: Negative space painting, also known as reverse or negative painting, is a technique where the focus is on painting the area around a subject (the negative space) rather than the subject itself (the positive space). The process is repeated, building layers of design & colour.

The concept activates the right side of your brain. Once you understand the process, there are so many ways to use it - and with so many different mediums.

We will work on 2 paintings - a 8X10 or 9X12 size. One will be simple shapes - eg circles or a basic leaf shape - just to get the hang of seeing the negative space. Then we will work on another painting similar to the lilies - with a focal point and an abstract background where we can use stencils as well with at least 3-4 layers.

Have some fun experimenting!

Supply List:

  • Transparent or semi-transparent watercolours in 3 primary colours plus 1 spicy colour to make a nice dark
  • Examples: Ultramarine or French Ultramarine Blue, Hansa Yellow or Yellow Ochre or New Gamboge, Quin Magenta or Permanent Rose or Rose Madder, and Burnt Sienna or Phthalo Turquoise or Quin Gold. BringElayne Preston - neg painting 1 what you have and we’ll figure it out
  • Watercolour Brushes - 1 round brush, medium size (6-10), 1 small detail brush or bring your favourites
  • Watercolour paper - enough for 1 piece about 5X7 and 1 piece 8X10 or 9X12. Block, pad, whole sheet - whatever you’ve got. Cold press is standard but we can make hot press or rough work too
  • Cups for water - can use solo cups or any used clean plastic containers - 2 each, 1 for clean water and 1 for dirty water
  • Pencil - nothing fancy. Eraser if you must
  • Palette - nothing fancy…somewhere you can mix a puddle of watercolour paint. Bring what you have
  • Old Towel - worn out and ready to be re-purposed. If you prefer to tape down your watercolour paper rather than using a towel, bring some masking tape and a board to fit your paper
  • Stencils - you can borrow some of mine or bring what you already have
  • Sponges - bring a Mister Clean Magic Eraser if you really want to have some fun, or grab a clean sponge from your kitchen or cleaning supplies to use with the stencils

Are you getting the picture - Just bring whatever you already have!

About the Instructor, Elayne Preston

Elayne’s artistic journey began upon retirement from healthcare about 8 years ago when she tried a watercolour class during a winter vacation in Arizona. She was hooked and soaked up as many classes as she could manage over the next few years with some wonderful local artist mentors.

Her first love is watercolour with its somewhat unpredictable nature. Most recently, Elayne has been experimenting with negative space painting in watercolour, creating intricate layered backgrounds by painting the space around objects. She discovered that each medium carries its own challenges and unexpected rewards, so she had to try others. Her artwork pieces now encompass watercolour, acrylic, alcohol ink, mixed media, collage, encaustic wax, water soluble oils & pastel (soft & oil). She paints using twigs, a gel press, an air compressor, dental wands, cling wrap, sculpting & nail art tools, sponges, foil, a squeegee and just about anything she can get her hands on.

She loves to explore a variety of subjects - especially west coast landscapes, flora & fauna. Some pieces incorporate the semi-abstract with a slight whimsical nature. Plein air painting (outdoors) adds to the fun - throw in a timed on-site competition and she’s in! You can also find Elayne painting down at West Beach in White Rock on nice days. She has participated in the Grand Prix of Art competition at Steveston for the past 3 years. Her husband, Terry, creates beautiful frames to showcase her work. They operate a booth to display/sell her pieces at local art fairs & artisan markets.
