Workshop Description and Overview

Demonstrations by the instructor will be interspersed throughout the workshop followed by time for the participants to practice and ask questions. On Day 2 the instructor will spend more 1:1 time with the participants.

DAY 1 - Mixed Media and Abstraction

The morning will provide participants with information and opportunities to experiment with acrylic paints, mediums and markers including crayons, oil pastels, pens and pencils as well as the making of and use of collage papers.

The afternoon will focus on Abstraction. What it is and some techniques will be described and demonstrated using the Elements of Design as a framework for approaching abstraction. Examples of various paintings will be used to illustrate how artists simplify, exaggerate/distort, flatten and use pattern to create abstracted paintings. The focus and demonstrations will be mainly of still life but participants can chose to apply these techniques to other subject areas if they choose. Images of other techniques such as merging, fracturing and combining representation with abstraction will be shown but not demonstrated. Participants will provided with a couple of exercises to work on.

Participants will then sketch a number of small compositions using some of the techniques.

DAY 2 - Putting it all Together

Day 2 will provide the time for participants to create a number of small paintings. Individuals will also have time to practice what they want e.g making more collage papers. The instructor will walk through some of her thoughts when demonstrating a small painting using one of the sketches as jumping off point. Another approach will also be shown using “old paintings” or surfaces already painted on to create new paintings.

The instructor will circulate among participants to answer questions and provide individual support as desired.

Wind up and feedback session.
