Workshop Description:

Sketching-on-the spot is like a portal and opportunity, offering a range of mark making from gestural to detailed representation. Our sketch journey makes us curious, evokes solitude and encourages mindfulness. Sketching can also provoke engagement with other artists or strangers. Our sketch practice can get us closer to our materials. Sketching-on-the spot can include still life, travel sketches, social reportage (like during the COVID period), portraits, self portraits, botanical or garden themes, landscapes/seascape, urban scenes, cafes, malls, street life, food, pets, household objects and don’t hesitate to encroach into abstraction too.

 Bob Altwein - Westham Island

Depending on the weather, you can sketch indoors or outside. As a back up, please consider bringing your own subject matter to work with. They could be objects or things, from the utterly commonplace to the positively intriguing, that are portable, safe and not messy. If you wish to add collage to your sketches, photos, magazine/book pages, tickets, stamps, documents or all useful as ephemera (things used for a short time) or memorabilia. Scissors and a glue stick too.

The Power of Prompts: Let’s consider applying elements and principles, from the prompts that will be touched on, that can enhance our sketch practice, including the rule of thirds, composition in general, texture, pattern, monotone, collage, etc.

About the Instructor: Bob Altwein

Throughout my working life, I was a graphic designer, but my sketch practice actually goes back to high school days and the four years in art school. In my 20s I worked abroad for VW Styling in Wolfsburg, West German, but otherwise locally at UBC and VCC. Bob Altwein - portrait

With retirement I have found a renewed passion with sketching. Since 2012 I have travelled in Western Canada and the USA as well as to Southeast Asia, Iceland, Romania, Germany, France and Ukraine. Metro Vancouver however has rich subject matter too. Also, I have participated in an artist residency, for two weeks in 2017. This was thanks to the Wallace Stegner House/Eastend Arts Council, in Saskatchewan. COVID provided the opportunity to pursue social reportage, brought on by the inherent isolation, to adapt by doing portraits of friends and acquaintances, for example, here and overseas, via online video.

Apart from leading workshops on Salt Spring Island and locally, I have also given demos for Opus Art Supplies. Finally, I’m also one of the co-organizers with the Vancouver Urban Sketchers Meetup, hosting for this community group.
