Date: Friday May 10

Time: 1:30pm to 5:30pm PT.

Please arrive 15 min early to get settled in.
Bring an apron to protect clothes.
Coffee, tea and light snacks will be provided.

Location: South Delta Artists Guild's Workroom

Level of Difficulty: Beginners or those who want a refresher. This is a small class in order for Scott to spend time with each student.

Workshop Description: This workshop is perfect for someone who is having difficulty getting watercolour to do what they want it to do. It will cover things such as:

  • Do I wet my paper first?
  • How much water do I use?
  • How do I mix colours?
  • What brush do I use?
  • How do I do the right brushstroke and what are brush techniques?
  • Why are my colours muddy?
  • Why is my painting a mess?
  • Do I have to be able to draw and should I even draw?

All the above will be answered plus more, demonstrated and taught with patience.  Note that we will not be creating a painting. We will be learning and practicing on the skills.

Materials list: Since we will be practicing, any colours will do. Bring at least 5 different colours.

  • Paper: Since we will just be practicing, you don't need the best quality paper.  But suggest the cheapest 140lb cold press paper, not hot pressed as this will behave differently..We just need small sheets such as 7 in x 10 in.
  • Sketchbook: For doing small preparatory thumbnails.
  • Masking tape: 1 inch general purpose masking tape or similar brand.
  • Painting board: a solid lightweight flat surface that is big enough to tape your paper to. If you don't have one, one will be provided.
  • Riser: A thick book or block of wood 2 inches thick (approx.) to rest your painting board at a slight angle.
  • Watercolour Palette: This can be plastic and inexpensive but does need to be large enough to have good mixing areas and enough wells for paint to be put into. Approx. 12 wells.
  • Water containers: at least 2, can be anything that will hold water.
  • Paper towel: I prefer Bounty as it is stronger and more absorbent, but bring whatever you like.  Bring 1 Roll.
  • Pencil: one 2B pencil and sharpener will be sufficient.
  • Water Spritzer Bottle
  • Scott Pleydell-PearceNo Masking fluid will be used in my workshop.

About the Instructor: Scott Pleydell-Pearce

Scott has been an artist all his life and at 55 years old has packed in a lot of experience. His working career is in the world of animation, where he has worked as an animator, storyboard artist, character designer, art director and now works as a Director for TV series animation.

He started painting in watercolours 12 years ago as a means to get creative freedom separate from his career. Self taught, Scott threw himself into the enormous challenge that is learning watercolours. His style can be described as bold, energetic, and dynamic. He has the ability to draw and paint very accurately and also turn his hand to a looser style as well. He is inspired by many things in the world around him, figures, architecture, landscapes, seascapes and most of all, loves to capture colour and light.

Scott's enthusiasm for painting has led him to teaching others. He loves sharing his knowledge of how to work with watercolour.
