Workshop Description: This paint-along class is ideal for beginners who want to try acrylics and have step-by-step guidance, as well as anyone who just wants an enjoyable day painting along with clear instructions while learning some acrylic techniques. You will do an underpainting, glazing, layering, and negative painting. This is an impressionistic approach and you will get lots of technical tips along the way.
Supplies:
Acrylic paint colours:
- Medium/heavy body vs. fluid: Quin. Magenta (OR Quin. Red, or Alizarin Crimson - but the Quin Magenta makes the nicest pinks!)
- Titanium White
- Ultramarine Blue
- Transparent Oxide Red or Transparent Oxide Brown...or any brown if you don't have either - we can make it work
- Black (we use very little of this and I will bring some to share if you do not have it already.
NOTE ON PAINT BRANDS: 'Professional' brands such as Liquitex or Golden are lovely, BUT if you are just starting out and have a limited budget, Liquitex Basics or Amsterdam will be fine (Liquitex Basics preferred). Kroma Paints are very good and made here in Vancouver. The store is on Granville Island. Another good Canadian choice is "Tri-Art" acrylics - available at Deserres.
Other supplies:
- Acrylic medium (regular fluid - NOT 'Open", and not a gel)
- Brushes - bring what you have. I use flats, but rounds or filberts will work. I will bring 'extras', so don't feel you have to buy any!
- Palette - I use a wet palette, but palette paper will work. Bring a spray bottle to spritz your paints if not using a wet palette.
- Painting support - you can use a canvas panel, or stretched canvas, or mounted canvas /acrylic paper. Not bigger than 16 x 20. If you are a fast painter, bring a second smaller (8 x 10 or 9 x 12) canvas as I will have another cherry blossom option.
- Pencil
- Water bucket
- Paper towel or cloth rags
- A palette knife for mixing your paints
