These are flowers I came across on a forest walk. At first I thought the single burgundy sprig I saw was a strange sight in the midst of everything else green. I even thought it looked a little like a burgundy stalk of asparagus. Then I came across a few more; until finally I came upon the field of orchids in bloom and sunlit. That's when I recognized what a friend had identified for me only the week before. Wild Orchids, specifically Western Spotted Coralroot, Corallorrhiza maculata var. occindentalis. Apparently, they only grow within 300 meters of the ocean and don't necessarily appear every year. It was a magical discovery.
