"Quietly whispering, rivers ran beneath the surface, draining summer." – Descending from an alpine ridge through boulder fields one summer we were kept company by the run off of the last of winters melting snow flowing deep under our feet. Even though we couldn't see them these babbling brooks kept us company with their gentle voices the whole way down to the lovely meadows at the Head of the south fork of the Stein Valley's Cottonwood Creek.
