Dale Byhre

Dates:     Saturday 20 May--Sunday 21 May 2023

Times:     10:00--4:00 (Please come at 9:30 to set up)

Coffee, tea and snacks will be served.  There will be 1/2 hour for lunch and you are are responsible for bringing your own.

Dale has been painting for most of his life.  Six years ago, he became a full time painter and in that time has won much praise and many accolades, including earning senior status in the Federation of Canadian Artists, and as a Signature member of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists.  Dale's medium of choice is acrylics which he employs skillfully in both his marine paintings and landscapes. Dale is also a proud member of the South Delta Artists Guild and a regular exhibitor.

This workshop is geared towards improving the basic techniques of acrylic painting with a focus on westcoast subject matter.  Artists will be shown and guided through the way I employ acrylics and assorted mediums.  Attendees will also be challenged to take risks and to be adventurous with their paint while working in class on their personal works.  Emphasis will be on big brushes and ample palettes of paint.  No miniscule brushes and tiny tubes of paint.  Artists will be encouraged to work large and quickly.

Supplies:

It is recommended that those attending bring subject matter--that is, photos of their choosing with which to work during class time.  Canvases or boards should be primed (gessoed) or under painted prior to class.  Artists are also recommended to each bring 2 small blank canvases, boards or canvas panels of about 5"x7", but not exceeding 8"x10", for classroom excercises each day.

Brushes:  3/4" bristle or synthetic, 1/2" bristle or synthetic, and 1/4" bristle or synthetic.  A single small, fine haired brush for only the most essential details.

Paints:  The acrylic paints I use are GoldenOpen brand.  Students should feel free to use these or any brand of artists acrylic paint.  Colours that I regularly use are:

Titanium White

Ultramarine Ble

Cerulean Blue

Cobalt Blue

Cadmium Red (or similar)

Cadmium Yellow

Burnt Sienna

Mediums:  Artists are encouraged to bring any choice of acrylic mediums that they enjoy using.  It is not necessary, but other mediums caninclude acrlic gels, pastes and retarders.
