Unlock the secrets of drawing the portrait with instructor Mark Glavina.  In this 4 week online class students will transform their drawing skills and learn to draw the portrait with confidence and a clear understanding of how to draw the portrait from all angles, and various points of perspective.  Students will learn drawing and measuring techniques to create a likeness in both pencil and charcoal with a series of exercises that will develop your artistic eye and observation skills.

Mark Glavina studied graphic design and illustration at Capilano College and has worked as a teacher and illustrator with various contracts including background painting for animation, private contracts and commissions as well as established a reputation as a muralist.  In the 90’s he turned to developing his own fine art, exploring environmental, cultural, social issues, while working with the figure and portrait. Mark has been teaching and facilitating art for over 20 years encouraging the benefits of art education for all ages as a pioneer of Community Public Art. In 1997 Mark opened Phoenix Art Workshop which has been hosting art classes both locally and abroad with his very successful and popular international art excursions with the Travelling Brush. Mark’s focus in recent years has been developing a comprehensive teaching philosophy for the fundamentals of art and visual literacy. Organizing community art events like Chalk the Boardwalk and the Grand Prix of Art, Mark has dedicated most of his recent energy to sharing his intense passion for art making.

 

Schedule:

Week 1: Exploring the main shapes of the portrait and their axis points

Week 2: Plains and perspective of the portrait

Week 3: Defining the features and characteristics of the portrait

Week 4: Understanding edges, contrast and contour creating drama

 

Supplies:

4B, 6B, 8B graphite pencil

Medium and soft charcoal pencil or compressed sticks

White pastel pencil or compressed sticks

Kneadable eraser

Newsprint (not smaller than 11 x 14, no larger than 18 x 24)

Strathmore toned mixed media paper or Kraft drawing paper (not smaller than 11 x 14,no larger than 18 x 24)

Sharpening knife/blade
