Details for "Amp Up Your Painting Skills: Doug Swinton, 26-27 May 2018"

 Doug Swinton

Doug Swinton

Hours:  9:30-4:30.  Please come at 9:00 to set up and have coffee.

Difficulty Level:  All Levels.

I never really intended to make art a career; it just keeps happening.  Maybe it's living in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and being surrounded by the spectacular landscape.  Maybe that it's that my mom was always in the kitchen painting wicker baskets of bright fruit with Chianti wine bottles, or maybe it was all the doodles and drawings that adorned each and every page of my math book.  But somehow, art has now become my career.

Since my childhood, drawing and painting have always played an important role in my life.  A big part of me never really left kindergarten.  I still live for the "Hey Mom, look what I made!"  I think exhibiting in galleries is just a bit of an extension of that.  And today, besides being an artist, Canada couldn't be a better place to live.  But for me as an artist, the close proximity of the prairies, foothills and mountains of Alberta makes my home province a never-ending dream.  I've been lucky, and have painted in many countries, but to me there is still nothing more beautiful than a cold beer and a hot Calgary summer sunset.  Art is not a living, it's living the art.

This workshop will be two days of exploring painting for artists of all levels whether you're working in oils or acrylics.  I work in oil and in a smattering of watercolour but I can help you in any medium you wish.  Since we all come to painting with a load of information and history of our own, it's not possible for me to know each individual's experience and abilities at the start.  I've designed my workshops so that it doesn't matter if you've been painting for half your life, or for half of the last month: each student will benefit from the lessons I've designed.  My aim is to help to strengthen your current abilities, and expose those skills that need strengthening.  I will work with each student at his or her own level and spend a lot of time with each of you at your easel, giving individual instruction.

You'll leave the workshop having spent two full days studying the basic elements of painting...drawing, value, edges, colour and composition...with one other element, possibly the most important of all...courage, being explored, discussed, and practiced each time the brush is in your hand.  You may not go home with paintings that need framing, but you will go home with a portfolio full of valuable exercises that you can refer back to as you move forward in your own painting process.  All I ask is that you come with an inquisitive and open mind and a willingness to try.
