People's Chioce Award
Provenance:
This young nomad was preparing to move his animals from the upper grazing range adjacent to Mt Kailash in western Tibet. Here my trekking partner succumbed to altitude sickness and had to be assisted off the mountain and back to our camp. This young man brought a couple of ponies and led us through difficult terrain by guiding us through icy glacial runoff and stinging sleet. When he traversed particularly difficult terrain his brilliant smile of concern shone through the severe weather contrasted with the austere landscape as he would turn around to make sure I was OK. He was dressed in a drab chupa and Ked running shoes with no laces and no socks.
The next morning he appeared in our camp dressed like royalty in his finest garb and bore the carriage of royalty. This is the image I painted. His eyes are intense and in my heart I will remember his smile.
As I painted him I was drawn back to the passionate beauty and generosity of the people of Tibet. He took my heart to the unplumbed depths of the Tibetan soul.
I wonder where he is now and if his way of life is still intact. Namaste.
